Dive into the fascinating world of macro photography with our personalised one-on-one course designed specifically for beginners. This hands-on experience will guide you through the essential techniques and skills needed to capture stunning close-up images of small subjects, from flowers and insects to everyday objects. Whether you’re a complete novice or looking to refine your skills, this course will provide you with the knowledge and confidence to explore macro photography.

Course Structure:


Duration: 1.5 hours

Location: Carwoola, NSW (outside Canberra)—choose between an outdoor field setting, or an indoor studio, or both. Held on an acreage property and in-home studio (disabled access).

Price: $90 for 1.5 hours

Numbers: One-on-one mentoring

Time: 9:00am on select Saturdays and Sundays

Course Outline:

 

Introduction to Macro Photography

  • Understanding macro photography and its unique challenges.

  • Overview of equipment: cameras, lenses, and accessories, settings, manual focus, etc.


Camera Settings and Techniques

  • Learning about aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings for macro photography.

  • Understanding depth of field and how to achieve sharp focus on small subjects.

  • Techniques for stabilising your camera to avoid motion blur.

  • Getting comfortable with manual focus and how to use that in handheld/field situations.

Composition and Lighting

  • Exploring composition techniques specific to macro photography.

  • Understanding natural and artificial lighting, and how to use tools such as diffusers to enhance your images.


Practical Shooting Session

  • Guided indoor shooting session where you will apply the techniques learned. We have a large supply of insects/flowers/etc to photograph.

  • Guided outdoor shooting session if weather/season permits and if desired.

  • Customisation of what is covered in the course depending on your needs/interests.

What to Bring

  • DSLR or Mirrorless Camera and macro lens/accessories: If you do not have your own camera and macro lenses/accessories, you can RENT a Panasonic DMC-GX7 camera with Olympus M.60 F2.8 Macro lens for an added $25 fee. 

  • Comfortable clothing and footwear for outdoor sessions.

  • A charged battery and spare memory card (not required if renting our camera).

  • Your camera's manual.

A studio setting to provide ample opportunity to hone your macro photography skills no matter the situation on the day. The availability of in-field flowers and insects to photograph is seasonally and weather dependent.
